Top Tourist Attractions in West Cornwall

Author: Thomas Craven

Cornwall, in the south west corner of the UK, is one of the top tourist destinations in England due to its great beaches, extensive moorlands, beautiful scenery and plentiful tourist attractions. West Cornwall, which is the most western part of the England, contains some great things to do and places to visit. Here is a selection of attractions that you might want to go to if you are staying in the area.

Land's End

Land's End is the most southerly part of the UK - its tip pointing out into the junction between the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its spectacular scenery, there is also a selection of attractions to visit, including galleries, restaurants and the Land's End Signpost. Land's End is located 9 miles to the west of Penzance.

Geevor Tin Mine

Located just down the road from Land's End is the Geevor Tin Mine. This mine was a working mine until 1990 and has now been maintained for visitors as the largest preserved mining site and museum in the United Kingdom. There are underground guided tours and the museum tells the story of the mining industry in Cornwall through the ages.

St Michael's Mount

Perhaps the most famous of Cornwall's landmarks, the steep sided island of St Michael's Mount is open to the public at weekends and throughout the summer. At low tide the island is accessible by the causeway, at high tide you'll need to take the ferry crossing. The mount itself is picturesque and a climb to the top yields great views of Penzance, land's End and the Lizard (the most western point of England).

Porthcurno Telegraph Museum

Ever wondered how information gets from one side of the world to the other? This museum is dedicated to the underground cables that run from this isolated beach on the south coast of Cornwall. From the days of Morse code to modern communications, this museum tells the story. There are a range of interactive exhibitions to demonstrate how the British Empire was run using these communications.

Paradise Park

Paradise Park wildlife sanctuary is the home for over 400 species of birds and other species from all around the world, including rare and endangered varieties. A great family destination, you can watch feeding sessions for the penguins, the flying bird show, ride on the miniature railway, play on the indoor Junglebarn slides and ball pit, and see the collection of rare parrot species.

Minack Theatre

The Minack Theatre is an open air venue located on the coast at Porthcurno Bay. It was built in a similar style to a Roman amphitheatre with construction starting in 1929. You can visit the theatre at any time of the year, to see the views and subtropical gardens and productions are staged in the summer between June and September.

The Top 5 Seaside Resorts in Britain

Great Britain or the UK has always had some great seaside resorts and despite the unpredictable weather you can have some really enjoyable breaks along the British coast. Recently the Which holiday magazine conducted a poll amongst it's readers who voted for their top seaside town. Here are the top 5 results in reverse order what do you think?

1. Scarborough

On the North Yorkshire coast Scarborough came fifth but is still my favourite resort. The average summer temperature is 19°C so quite warm. I've been really lucky and whenever I've gone there it's been blazing hot during the day and lively at night! I've sunbathed there, shopped, been fishing, camped at the motorbike road races, stayed in a top hotel, holiday cottage, caravan and boarding house and loved every minute of every visit. Founded by a viking raider, Scarborough has it's own ruined castle, retains some of it's fishing industry and even has it's own annual beach rock and pop festival, a great place to visit.

2. Bournemouth

It's quite a long time since I've been to Bournemouth which is in Dorset on the South Coast of England. My memories are of lots of sand and riding donkeys, but I was a child then. Apart from the normal seaside entertainment Bournemouth now hosts a 4 day flying festival in the summer.  There you might see wing walkers, displays from such as the red devils and memorial flights from Lancasters, Hurricanes and Spitfires, plus flights from modern day aircraft.

3. Whitby

Another resort from the North Yorkshire coast, we in Yorkshire are doing well to have 2 of the most popular seaside towns nearby. The fishing port of Whitby is famous for featuring in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and even has a Dracula museum for tourists to visit. Every year in August for 3 days is the Whitby Regatta which started out as a rowing competition and has now grown to in clude a fair on the pier, military displays, police demonstration and fireworks. Bi-annually Whitby hosts a gothic weekend especially for goths.

4. Brighton

On the South Coast Brighton attracts 80 million tourists every year and is a great favourite of Londoners in need of a short break or day out.  The resort became popular in the late 18th century when the Prince Regent to a liking to the place and built the Royal Pavillion. Considered to be one of the UK's top places for nightlife Brighton also hosts the second largest arts festival in the UK every May and the Brighton Festival Fringe.

5. Blackpool

On the North West coast the Lancashire town Blackpool is the winner of the most popular seaside resort in Britain. Bold and brash Blackpool became popular as a tourist resort during the 19th century for northern mill and factory workers and is still popular for residents of the north and Scotland. Walk along the golden mile with or without your kiss me quick hat on, see the shows on the piers, go ballroom dancing in the Tower Lounge, have fun at the Pleasure Beach, check out the illuminations. There is something for everybody at Blackpool and for me it's always been an enjoyable time. Whether it's been for a week or a day, when I'm on my way there and see the tower in the skyline I get a feeling of anticipation knowing that I'm going to have some fun.

There we have it, the top 5 seaside resorts here in the UK. Although numbers declined with the onset of cheap foreign travel these places still get busy in the summer. They aren't the only resorts in this country, there are many others all with a different personality and all waiting to welcome you on a visit.

Find Your Sea Legs Aboard The Ss Great Britain

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is one of Britain's most famous sons and as an engineer he is responsible for the creation of the Great Western Railway as well as numerous important tunnels and bridges including the Thames Tunnel and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

However, Brunel also created a number of famous steamships, including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship – the SS Great Britain – which can be seen moored in Bristol's dry dock.

Bristol has many tourist attractions and the SS Great Britain attracts its fair share of visitors onto its decks. First launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain was the largest vessel of its time and the first to incorporate iron construction with a screw propeller into a single ocean-faring ship.

The SS Great Britain was constructed in Bristol's dry dock – where it resides today – and was launched in 1843. Originally designed to have a wooden hull, Brunel redrafted plans and adopted an iron hull after associates travelled to Antwerp and back aboard an iron hulled vessel.

SS Great Britain's original propulsion was to be via paddlewheels but after an encounter with the SS Archimedes – the world's first screw-propelled steamship, Brunel studied and developed the technology for use on the SS Great Britain. This led to the scrapping of paddlewheel propulsion for the ship, and despite the ship already being well into construction screw-propulsion was incorporated into the final design.

Despite launching in 1843, SS Great Britain wasn't completed until 1845 due to a series of delays caused by the constant redesigns and remained in Bristol harbour until 1844, as the redesigns had made SS Great Britain too large to pass through Bristol harbour's lock gates. After modifications the ship eventually took to sea in the following year.

As a passenger liner the SS Great Britain traversed a route between Britain and the United States and latterly between Britain and Australia before later becoming a cargo ship. After a fire on board in 1886 caused a navigational error, the SS Great Britain landed at Port Stanley in the Falkland Isles where it was found to be damaged beyond repair. It became a storage hulk for coal before being scuttled and abandoned in 1937.

In 1970, following numerous sizeable donations a salvage crew took the SS Great Britain back to Britain and Bristol dry dock where it all began.

Today, the SS Great Britain is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Bristol where the sights, sounds and smells of life on board the vessel during its service years can be experienced and the ship's full history and that of its creator can be discovered.

Such is the popularity of the SS Great Britain as a tourist attraction that guests from numerous hotels in Bristol visit on a regular basis thanks in part to its free unlimited visits for a year following visitors' initial ticket purchase. Most hotels will also carry tourist information leaflets detailing not only the SS Great Britain but also other tourist attractions in and around the city.

Gibraltar – A piece of Britain in the Mediterranean

Known as ‘The Rock’, Gibraltar is a little bit of Britain in the Mediterranean. The ownership of this tiny piece of land has long been a sensitive issue with the neighbouring Spanish. In Greek mythology, Gibraltar (Calpe) was one of the Pilars of Hercules marking the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. The north coast of Africa is just 14 miles away and can be seen from Europa Point, making Gibraltar a place of strategic importance. Britain took control of the Rock in 1713 and it was formally declared a colony in 1830. It was also here where the HMS Victory underwent repairs after the Battle of Trafalgar before returning back to Britain with Nelson’s body. In 2002, there was a referendum where the locals overwhelming rejected any involvement by Spain in their government.

The locals are proud to be British citizens and while on the Rock, you are under no illusion that it is anything other than British. Street names such as “Winston Churchill Avenue”, the cash machines churn out £10 notes (proper ones, not like ones from Scotland), familiar high street names like Marks & Spencer, pictures of the Queen in the hotels, pubs such as the “Lord Nelson”..you get the idea. The one concession that has been made is that traffic flows on the right hand side of the road on the narrow, badly signposted one-way system of Gibraltar.

The airport at Gibraltar is owned by the Ministry of Defence for use by the Royal Air Force as RAF Gibraltar. Civilian flights share the runway which dissects Winston Churchill Avenue. This means every time a plane lands or takes off, the main street has to be closed to traffic for around 10 minutes. While this feature of Gibraltar is part of its charm, it also means that only a few flights a day can land / take off without causing severe traffic disruption. A new airport is planned which will give the airport a large increase in capacity and a tunnel under the runway which will reduce tailbacks and delays. Once completed, the new Gibraltar airport will give both Gibraltar and the Andalucia region of Spain a better air link.

There is a still a big military presence in Gibraltar with the very upper part of the rock out of bounds to the public. For the tourist, the majority of the attractions are in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. If you have a car, you can drive the route yourself otherwise there are plenty of companies who are willing to take you. Once you’ve paid your entrance, the first point of call are the spectacular St Michael’s Caves. Around 300m above sea level, they are one of Europe’s most natural grottoes.

Next stop is Apes’ Den. The most famous residents of Gibraltar are the Barbary Macaques and they roam freely throughout the nature reserve. Despite giving the impression they are tame, visitors must remember they are wild animals who will bite. They aren’t shy about stealing food or other belongings and will almost certainly try to get into your vehicle if given the opportunity.

The Great Siege Tunnels were excavated by the British Army during the siege of 1779-1783. Visitors can’t fail to be impressed with this defence system which gives a fantastic view from the rock over the airport into Spain. The military theme continues at the Military Heritage Centre where there is an array of artefacts housed in Princess Caroline’s Battery.  The City Under Siege Exhibition demonstrates the appalling conditions the British soldiers had to survive under during the Great Siege and there is graffiti dating back to the 18th century.

The final point of interest on the Upper Rock is the Moorish Castle that dates back to the 14th century. It is located on the north-western slope and its Tower of Homage dominates the only land entrance to Gibraltar. Your entry ticket to the National Park also gets you into one more place; the 100 Ton Gun which is located down in the town. This fearsome weapon had a bore of 17.72 inches, fired a 371 kg shell which was capable of piercing 16.3 inches of mild steel at a range of 2,000 yards.

Gibraltar is well worth a visit as it is a unique place for the curious traveller either as a short break or part of a longer trip to Andalucia.

Are Travel Agents Necessary?

Travel agents may charge more than doing a manual booking but they can provide much convenience to any traveler that in the end the traveler will not be minding that extra amount charged to them. Be sure to take note of the services that can be provided by the top agencies available. Check the itinerary and consider every aspect before hiring a travel agency to provide a form of service for the trip.

Positive and negative effects are handled with proper methods by travel agents when it comes to applying particular developments in technology to the businesses that they run in terms of how something bad may be turned to develop into something good for the company and vice versa. Agencies can use the internet to their advantage reaching more clients worldwide thus resulting to more business in return for them. Travelers have the option of refraining from using agents since the suppliers too are on the internet and it is up to them whether or not they will be requiring a middleman to do the job of booking the trip and the like.

Travel agents can also come to offer travelers with comprehensive insurance coverage, car rental and hotel room arrangements, and there are some with foreign exchange services as well. The problem with some agencies is that they may choose a selected market to which they will sell certain products or they can choose to support only a few suppliers. The capacity to spend and the ability to generate profits decide on which clients and suppliers to patronize.

Travel products from travel suppliers are managed and distributed locally by travel agents to people who can afford the services. Travel agencies only purchase items from the supplier when a customer books a trip and they do not keep any stock in hand. The agencies get a commission for every successful sale wherein they are supplied with travel tickets at a lower or discounted price than what they are initially advertising.  The 1920's gave rise to aviation as a mode of transport and so did travel agents increase in popularity as a result of the former.

Services from agencies that were meant for the  higher classes of society were soon redesigned to fit the needs of the working class as well. The working class availed of assistance when it came to the occasional beach holiday where agencies are flooded with assistance requests.  The first service from travel agents originated in Britain with a particular bank offering travel services to some wealthy clients. Beginning in 1758, more modern travel services emerged only during the later years of the nineteenth century. The first package tours were originally arranged making use of the services of railway transportation in the earlier years of travel agencies.

Travel agents also manage business plans when a person is traveling and are not limited to the holiday or vacation traveler. It is possible for business and commercial traveling clients to acquire services from agencies who specialize in their particular travel needs. There are agencies who mediate for foreign companies and these can be given office spaces in the foreign countries concerned.  There are several travel companies who transact with travel agents in terms of the distribution of a selected variation of products and services that the public might be interested in. These agencies are selling products supplied by companies who cater to services for airlines, cruise lines, railways, car rentals, and hotels.

Travelers have the opportunity of taking packages and tours to maximize their vacation and this they can get from even local agencies that are equally as able as other providers of the service.  What benefits can be gained from the use of travel agents and can every traveler obtain the necessary services they need? What should be considered when deciding to avail of services from a travel agency and are there rules for choosing policies? This article can show how travel agencies can become beneficial on the onset of emergencies depending on what travelers may need.

Holidaying in the UK: A Growing Trend this Summer

If you intend on holidaying in the UK this summer, you are amongst a growing band of Britons who have turned their back on traveling abroad – at least for now. Economic uncertainty and straightforward prudence mean that rather than shell out thousands of pounds on taking the family abroad people are opting to take their main holiday in the UK.

Let’s face it, the reason most people travel abroad isn’t because there’s nothing to see or do in the UK, but rather that the British summer weather can be a trifle unpredictable. However, now that the nation’s weather forecasters are telling us that this year’s summer is set to be fantastically sunny then that just puts the icing on the cake of holidaying in the UK.

The UK may be a small country, but there is an incredible variety in terms of what’s available for holidaymakers. Being an island helps as there is plenty of shoreline and with a plethora of coastal resorts of varying levels of sophistication. From the traditional ‘kiss me quick’ hats, Pleasure Beach theme park and Tower of Blackpool to the more refined elegance of the Dorset town of Bournemouth; there is something for any family wishing to have a seaside holiday.

Alternatively, with such fantastic spots of natural beauty throughout the UK such as the Lake District, Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Peak District, and so on, there is also plenty of choice for those seeking an activity holiday. Perhaps even a trip to London to see what the capital has to offer such as the UK’s biggest tourist attraction the London Eye, as well as the proliferation of other attractions.

A word of warning, however, if you are intending on holiday in the UK this summer - don’t let thieves or accidents ruin it. Having travel insurance UK is just as important as it would be if you jetted off abroad. The risks associated with a holiday at home are almost identical to traveling abroad and with the exception of your passport just about everything you would take abroad with you will also be packed for a holiday in the UK.

Just imagine how your holiday could soon turn into a nightmare if your wallet or purse was stolen. Away from home you would have to cancel all your cards and therefore have great difficulty in getting any cash. Travel insurance, even if staying in the UK, usually allows for the provision of emergency replacement cash, which may just save the holiday!

Of course, the majority of holidaymakers, whether in the UK or abroad, never have to claim on their travel insurance, but having it allows for peace of mind when travelling, allowing you to enjoy a fabulous holiday!

  • use your judgement when buying and eating food you've not prepared yourself
  • respect the environment – don't buy wildlife souvenirs, conserve resources like water and don't drop litter
  • check import regulations for food and plants before you attempt to bring them back to the UK

However, like most people going on foreign tours, you must be carrying some apprehensions concerning the safety of yourself and your family. After all, your family is your most prized possession and the last thing you want is that they be stranded in some strange and unfamiliar foreign land in the event of something going awry.

In these days of economic turmoil, we often hear of companies going bust and the frequent cancellation of flights. In such a scenario, it is not alarmist to make safeguards for such a situation against the airlines and travel company you bank upon. After all, god forbid, if something like this does happen in the middle of your vacation, you would not want to face the avoidable nightmare of fending for yourself and watching your hard earned money going down the drain!

Thanks to Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) scheme, you can get yourself an iron clad guarantee against such unforeseen circumstances. ATOL is a scheme for ensuring the financial protection of travellers. Under this scheme, in case a travel operator listed under ATOL goes bust, then passengers of that tour operator do not have to suffer hassles like losing money or staying marooned. For instance, if you plan your itinerary with Southall Travel, which is an ATOL member, you won't run such risks. To be thorough in your homework, always make sure that you check out the operator's website, which in this instance is Southall Travel UK.

ATOL makes it mandatory for its travel operators to be part of a financial guarantee scheme for passengers. This scheme is under the management of Air Travel Trust (ATT) and this is the agency responsible for providing bailout funds that ensure passenger safety, when things go wrong. You simply cannot afford to overlook ATOL, especially when you book tickets for long haul air travel like flights to India further eastwards. The significance of ATOL can be gauged from the fact that it falls under the responsibility of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which is the number one specialist aviation regulator in the UK.

The UK government even mandates that all tour operators selling flight packages within its boundaries need to hold the ATOL license. This license is granted only when the tour operator in question satisfies the licensing requirements laid down by the CAA. Every ATOL holder has an exclusive ATOL number, and this number can be cross checked by visiting the CAA website, CAA UK.

In a way, ATOL is like your travel insurance. In fact, ATOL members do need to acquire insurance bonds from the CAA. The purpose behind the entire exercise is to make sure that passengers face the least possible inconvenience in the event of flight cancellation. Not only are passengers entitled to refund of fares and alternative flights, they also get other amenities promised in the holiday deal package.

So, next time you think about saving some money by booking DIY holidays, keep it in mind that you would be much better off with an ATOL protected holiday package anytime. Saving a few pounds by not ensuring ATOL protection and then blowing off a major chunk of your savings in case of some misfortune is not a wise deal at all.
